You know the deal, you've rocked into work like it's a regular Tuesday - and Joanne (the girl you speak to...okay quite often, you send the odd text and you know each other's favourite ice cream flavour) - has left something on your desk...festively wrapped, bow intact with a label on top reading;
"Not to be opened until Xmas hehe!"
First of all, how dare Joanne utter the words "hehe" with no sense of irony, and secondly - SAY WHAT?! You didn't know you were buying each other presents?! There's only a few shopping days left of the holidays, what on earth are you going to buy her??
Simple, you ain't gonna buy her nothin'! Not because you have a vendetta against Joanne, or even because you're still a little bit mad at her for not sharing her dessert with you at the Christmas Party (she's allergic to gluten AND she barely touched the thing). No, no, it's because you're going to thoughtfully make her something, tonight - using this very last minute gift guide.
Gift Solution #1 Bake Her Something Delicious
Examples are here, here and here.
Baking something
mouth-wateringly yummy is the easiest last minute gift ever and it makes you
look super creative and thoughtful that you’ve made her something with love.
Make a batch of your favourite sweet treat, present it fashionably in a clear
cellophane bag and tie with a festive ribbon and a candy cane if you have one
floating around (who doesn’t this time of year?!) And voila – crisis averted.
Gift Solution #2 Make a Mix Tape
Okay, okay I know this is super teen rom-com circa
1999 BUT this year’s Blockbuster film Guardians of the Galaxy officially made
Mix Tapes cool again, and this is a great solution if you’re more nightmare
than Nigella in the kitchen.
Download a compilation of their favourite songs, maybe
songs you guys have memories to, or even a bunch of songs you want to recommend
to them and burn them onto a CD (a cassette would be more authentic, but who
even knows where they last saw their beloved walkman?) Design a cute CD sleeve
and you my buddy, are one thoughtful gift giver.
Gift Solution #3 Make your Own Spa Scrub
Winter is a fabulous time of year, but aside from
festivities, sparkly lights and joyous times, what does it also bring? No, no,
not just pigs and blankets, it brings a dosage of dry skin – lovely!
You can bring your friend the gift of super soft and
exfoliated skin – okay, sounds a bit weird, but don’t knock it, this is a
delightful little present for the woman that has everything!
Making your own scrub is simple and takes minutes to
do! Get yourself a cute mason jar and fill it with 2 parts of brown sugar (you
can use salt but I find sugar a lot less abrasive and leaves a more fragrant
smell) 1 part extra virgin coconut oil (again, this is just my preference, I
enjoy smelling like a cupcake but by all means go for Baby Oil if you don’t
want such a fragrant product.)
If you use these two products I doubt you’ll need any
essential oils for added perfume, but if you’ve used plainer ingredients then
add a couple of drops of any essential oil (try ylang ylang or jasmine for a
truly relaxing smell). Then, once you’ve got all your ingredients together, mix
them so they’re all incorporated, seal the jar and decorate festively with a
red and white candy cane bow.
If you have a bit of extra time, why not go the extra
mile and pick up some loofah gloves and a towel turban – you are essentially
giving her a spa day without the expense or snobby receptionist!
Gift Solution #4 When all Else Fails – MONEY $$$
I’m not talking give her a wad of cash. I’m thinking make an
adorable card – sling a 20 in there and write a thoughtful message detailing how
you guys are gonna spend that money on a Coffee & Cake afternoon or a Dominoes
(better make it 30) & DVD night to beat those January Blues when you’re
both suffering from moth purse.
I hope these have been inspiring for any last-minute panic buyers. Sometimes giving a homemade gift just makes it seem that more special and thoughtful - hey, I won't even take credit for it!
Happy Holidays xx
