My Airplane Skincare Routine
Hola!
So as a lot of you may know (due to the fact I haven't been able to shut up about it), I am currently on holiday! Yes sir-ee bob, I am currently in sunny Florida or more specifically Orlando, land of Disney, IHOP and Harry Potter World, and keeping with the travel theme of my last post, I thought I'd share some more tips and insights you might find useful!
Now, I love holidays and I especially love the excitement you get when waiting to check your bags in at the airport or you're waiting to take off. The only thing that I'm not so crazy over, is the effect it has on my skin.
I remember an instance about 3 years ago when I was suffering pretty heavily with acne, I had gone abroad with some friends and after 10 days of being in a hot climate and wearing minimal make-up, my skin had improved greatly! Imagine my distress when only a mere hour into our plane journey home, I feel two lurkers erupting on my skin. You may have experienced this too when flying, your skin will get increasingly dry, appear tired and grey or even begin breaking out, but why does this happen you may ask?
Well, as you're around 30,000 feet up in the sky, the plane recycles the air inside the cabin to maintain an appropriate oxygen level inside the plane - great news for your lungs, not so great for your skin. The recycled plane air dries out your skin, sucking out the moisture and leaving it gasping for a drink, this is why an in-flight beauty routine is something I now do as habit whenever I take a flight, to keep breakouts and bay and to ensure my skin is looking fresh and healthy on take-off and landing.
Okay, so at the top is a picture of my chosen beauty products I take to use on the plane. Once we've taken off and the pilot has switched off the seatbelt sign, I get to work in removing the make-up I wore to the airport. Foundations and any other heavy products will clog up your pores and will leave your skin feeling clammy and undernourished which is why taking it off is the essential first step.
I use a travel-sized bottle that I filled with Bioderma before my flight, this is my favourite make-up remover as it's fresh and doesn't leave my skin feeling tight. Using a cotton pad, I'll get rid of all the make-up I'm currently wearing and dispose of the cotton pads in the toilet.
Next I'll take the sample of Dermologica's Skin Hydrating Masque, I picked this up from my local Selfridges a couple of weeks before my travel date, sample sizes are perfect for taking on the plane and you can just throw them out when you're done! So even though it might seem embarrassing, I'm going to be applying this masque in my seat and making sure I've covered my entire face, focusing on my problem areas like my chin and forehead. I'll leave the masque on for 20 minutes, this particular sample is very popular with Beauty Guru's to use on the plane as it's so nourishing to the skin - who cares if other travelers think you're weird, you'll be laughing when you're the one leaving with fabulous skin.
Okay so after about 20 minutes I'll wash the masque off either in the toilet using the skin, or by using a cotton pad doused in a little bit of water. Next I'm going to give my eyes a treat and use a sample I saved of the Kiehl's Avacado Creamy Eye Treatment, this is going to de-puff my eyes and make them seem brighter and less tired. Along with the eye treatment I'm going to take my small sample pot of Origins Gin-Zing Energy-Boosting Moisturiser. This moisturiser is perfect for waking up tired skin and giving it a bit of a boost, I'll apply this all over and finish up with some Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream on my lips to keep the hydrated and soft.
This routine keeps my skin covered for the first half of the flight, the second half (about 6 -7 hours in) is when I'll start prepping for landing. So after giving my skin another wash with Bioderma, I'll then go over my skin with another drink of Origins Gin-Zing moisturiser and let that soak in for 10 minutes before I begin applying make-up.
Now applying make-up before you land is completely optional, I just like to do it to look a bit more human before landing. Rather than using a foundation which will dry out my face, I picked up a sample of Shu Uemura BB cream with SPF 30, this is perfect when landing in a hot country as it'll protect your face from harmful UV rays which cause premature aging. I'll apply this quickly with my fingers and then take my NYX Blush in Rose Garden to give my cheeks a bit more colour.
I'm keeping it super simple for my make-up, I don't want anything extravagant, just a nice, healthy glow .
After blush I'm going to fill in my brows and curl my lashes with my Shu Uemura lash curler (don't worry, this won't get taken off you at airport security!), after a light coating of Givenchy Travel Mascara, I'll just apply some Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream to my lips, cheekbones and cupids bow for a natural looking glow.
And that about wraps it up for my in-flight skincare and make-up routine! My main focus is always on giving your skin the nutrition it need so even if you miss out a few steps, be sure to drink lots of water throughout the flight and apply moisturiser regularly, these are the most vital steps however doing all of them are most beneficial for your skin.
I hope this gives you a few ideas for your holiday and helps you keep your skin feeling healthy and nourished ready for your next adventure!
See you next time, mahalo!

I love this blog and wish I had applied it to my things to do on the last plane journey I took which gave me more twice enough time to do it. I did take note however of the sample idea and found that by applying eye cream over my barely there foundation did stop my eyes becoming less tired looking when Ianded. Another brilliant blog thank you.
